becomePhD

Doctoral Research Sponsorship & Scientific Collaboration

Supporting research talent. Sharing knowledge. Building useful solutions together.

becomePhD is BECOME Institute's initiative supporting selected doctoral research through sponsorship, professional research mentoring and academic collaboration. It connects emerging researchers with expertise and applied research opportunities, helping scientific knowledge progress towards useful applications for people and communities.

Why becomePhD exists

BECOME was founded on the conviction that research should benefit society and that a person's country should not define their opportunity to contribute. becomePhD puts this purpose at the centre of a sustained relationship with emerging scientific talent.

Our ambition is to help researchers develop their contribution, connect with complementary expertise and investigate questions that matter beyond a single institution. Knowledge sharing and reciprocal collaboration are central to that work.

Research support shaped around the work

Support is defined for each researcher and collaboration. Depending on the agreement, it may include financial sponsorship, professional research mentoring, scientific exchange and connections to relevant technical or application expertise.

The starting point is a meaningful research question, a suitable academic setting and a clear understanding of the contribution that BECOME can make. The form, duration and resources of support are agreed individually. Participation does not automatically include a full scholarship, employment or identical conditions for every researcher.

Academic collaboration with clear responsibilities

becomePhD complements the work of universities and research institutions. Academic supervision, doctoral enrolment, assessment and the award of the degree remain the responsibility of the relevant university.

BECOME's contribution connects this academic setting with professional research mentoring, applied questions and opportunities for collaboration. Responsibilities, expected activities and the use of research results are defined within the appropriate agreement.

From research questions to useful applications

A doctoral project can advance a method, improve the understanding of a system or investigate a possible application. becomePhD encourages connections between scientific rigour and the needs that research may help address.

Where appropriate, a result may progress towards further validation, an industrial collaboration, licensing or venture development through BECOME's integrated international DeepTech Venture Studio. A startup is one possible pathway, not the required outcome of doctoral research. The scientific question and the interests of the contributors remain central.

Research support in practice

Collaborative Doctoral Research with ENISo and LATIS

Through the becomePhD initiative, BECOME entered into a 36-month collaborative doctoral research framework with the National Engineering School of Sousse — ENISo — and the Laboratory of Advanced Technology and Intelligent Systems — LATIS. The programme combines academic supervision, professional mentoring, research financing and applied technology development.

Knowledge shared responsibly

Scientific exchange can help researchers learn from different methods, experiences and perspectives. Shared knowledge should remain accurately attributed and respect confidentiality, intellectual property and personal information.

Published research can be explored through the researchers' profiles and BECOME's publication library. Original authorship and affiliations remain visible. Work completed before a researcher joined becomePhD is not automatically presented as a programme-funded result. Unpublished manuscripts and ongoing confidential work are not disclosed.

Build a doctoral research collaboration

Researchers and universities can begin with a non-confidential outline of the research question, academic context and support sought. Organisations interested in supporting scientific talent can discuss contributions that fit a defined research collaboration.

An initial enquiry opens a conversation. Participation and any sponsorship depend on the fit with the research, available resources and an agreed arrangement. Specific opportunities are communicated when their conditions are confirmed.

Discuss a Doctoral Research Collaboration

Common questions

Does BECOME award the PhD?

No. The doctoral degree is awarded by the relevant university. becomePhD supports selected research through arrangements that complement the academic framework.

Is sponsorship automatically available for every applicant?

No. Support is considered individually and defined by the relevant agreement and available resources. An enquiry does not constitute an offer of funding or employment.

Can researchers and institutions from different countries contact BECOME?

Yes. The initiative reflects BECOME's international purpose and commitment to widening scientific participation. Each proposed collaboration is considered in its academic and practical context.
